The use of cellular phones has increased by far over the last decade. Before I go into what cell phone jammers are, I’d like to start with a very familiar situation we see more or less every day. Almost every person you see on the road will possess a cell phone. The funniest part of this observation will be that, there will be a certain group of cell phone users who think they own the area around them! I am talking about those people who keep blabbering on their phones irrespective of the surroundings. They actually do not care if their conversation is disturbing someone around them or is causing them any sort of discomfort. You will come across some of these people in a movie hall, when you are trying to concentrate on some important dialogue, or when you are at some restaurant, trying to have a peaceful meal with your loved one. Another place you will find them is, in the seat just next to you on a crowded bus. No matter how much you try to make them understand that you really want them to shut up, they will not seem to heed any such gesture. They continue with their annoying conversation for hours at end (or so it seems!) without having the decency to hang up.
Why cell phone jammers?
To bring an end to this oh-so-annoying conversation, cell phone jammers are used. They may be big devices or small hand-held ones depending on the area of coverage you would want to jam. Small cell phone jammers are capable of jamming an entire movie hall, a restaurant, or a compartment in a metro! So, the next time you hear a person talking incessantly on the phone, switch on the jammer and you can be at peace.
What are cell phone jammers and how do they work?
Cell phone jammers are devices that create a ‘dead zone’ to all the signal traffic that is present within its range. We first have to know how a cell phone works. There are base stations which send signals to the cell phones in order to connect to them whenever they come within the coverage area. Every base station is entitled to a separate coverage area of its own. Thus, when a person travels from one place to another, these base stations hand over the connections among themselves. Cell phone jammers work at the same frequency as the cell phones. Thus, when they are used, they disrupt the communication between the base station and the cell phone. Thus, a person speaking on the phone will simply think that his phone is out of coverage area!
Usually, cell phone jammers are used by the police and other governmental organizations, to stop communication during hostage situations or bomb threats. In some countries, it is illegal to use a cell phone jammer and a person caught using one is heavily penalized. This is because while you might be trying to stop an annoying conversation, an important call to 911 or some emergency service may also get terminated.
However, since being caught using a jammer is not easy, I would really want to use one in a movie hall and in a bus! Considering everything, I feel that the government should be somewhat lenient with their usage in public places.
