Correctly Research Your Keywords

Keyword research is primary in every Internet related venture. It doesn’t matter if you are an organic search guru or a PPC baron, you’d better be able to pinpoint the keywords that matter and become competitive for them as rapidly as possible.

Here are a few pointers on keyword research that you may find useful.

Basic Research
To get started, you need to do a little basic research and make a list of all the keywords and key phrases that you come up with. You probably have a very rudimentary idea of what people are searching for. If you have no idea at all of the type of products and services to promote, take a look at the article (choosing a niche) on my web site, it might offer you some ideas..

I like to begin with 30 -40 keywords or keyphrases and refine them down until i have approximately 20.

I like to get started using the Google Keyword Tool – it’s free, straightforward to use and has a good amount of data to draw from. Like nearly all free keyword tools it is not 100% correct and is based on PPC data, so if you’re working on an organic campaign, it’s not going to be entirely what you’re looking for, but it’s a suitable start.

Right, lets get started. Go to adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal and enter a phrase into the search box. For this instance i will only enter one key phrase, which will be Dog training. The details that come back will give you more ideas for keywords and key phrases. For example, how to train a dog and dog problems

Take a look at the Global Monthly Searches Column to see how many people are searching for that specific keyword. Disregard the other columns, they relate to PPC and advertising.

Nearly all of these keywords and keyphrases can be filtered out but there will be some in there that you can definitely use. Your goal is to build a list of terms that would fit into a dog training related site.

I would suggest looking for lower traffic terms of between 250 – 1200. With this method you will not be in competition against thousands or possibly millions of other sites that are targeting the high volume keywords. As an example the term dog training has 1,220,000 monthly searches and would be very hard to rank on because of the competition. Now, lets imagine that you have built a website on smaller search volume keywords such as, advanced dog training, best dog training book and alpha dog training. You could then use these keywords for your articles and reviews. You could still get lots of visitors to your web site each month by targeting less popular keywords that are easier to get a decent page ranking.

Next I want to take a look an a program called Traffic Travis. I use this software to research keywords and to see what the competition is doing. There is a full review of Traffic Travis and the option to download the freebie version on my site

Traffic travis is an all in facility for discovering niche markets and keywords it also has web page analysis, seo analysis and much much more. Find out more and see my full review by visiting my website.
