Fashion Advice For Interns
Starting a new job as an intern can be a scary prospect. There are always lots of new faces to meet and plenty of good impressions to be formed. For most of us, the trauma of what to wear on your first day can be just as daunting as the interview itself. Getting your style right is the first step to putting yourself at ease on your first day of work and it could be the very thing that sets you apart from the other employees and gets you noticed. So if you want to make a good impression take a little time to perfect your working look, so that you can feel and look great even on an intern’s wage packet.
Once you’ve landed a job you can glean a little confidence from the fact that your new employers liked what they saw the first time round. For all new workers the prospect of the first big pay packet means you can afford to splash out on some new office attire but, for interns, who usually work for free or a very low wage, it’s trickier to get an outfit together that will not only come from your existing wardrobe but will be the right style and look for work. For interns, the desire to make a good impression and the hope they might land a job at the end of your internship means feeling confident and creating the right look is all the more important.
If you’re just beginning an internship, and you can’t afford to buy entirely new work outfits just yet, it’s a good idea to update some key pieces in your existing wardrobe. Remember, this is the first time your work colleagues will see your fashion sense so get creative and try to find new interesting ways to wear those favourite old shirts that have been in the back of your wardrobe for years. If you do need to purchase new clothes buy versatile items such as a plain white shirt or a basic black or grey pencil skirt which you can then dress up or down depending on your office’s clothes policy.
On your first day as an intern, always opt for a smart look, you don’t want to turn up in jeans if all your new colleagues are decked out in suits. Smart trousers work well if coupled with a smart plain top, but try not to flash too much flesh, as this can sometimes be deemed as inappropriate in the workplace.
Once you have done a couple of days in your new position you will get a sense of what’s suitable to wear for your internship. Check out what your colleagues wear and adapt your wardrobe accordingly, keeping a little of your own personal style of course.
Whether you are Petite or tall, fat or thin, putting together a few great work outfits will not only give you plenty of confidence but will help you relax and make a good impression. So get creative with your wardrobe and you may just impress your colleagues enough to land your dream job.
