Fashion and Function: Surviving the Heat
When summertime temperatures begin to climb, most of us just want to get cool and comfortable. But heat and humidity don’t have to push you to make bad fashion choices. Plan ahead for warmer weather, and ensure you survive the heat with both fashion and function in mind.
Whether you’re going on holiday in the tropics, or planning an array of weekend activities in your home city, ensuring your wardrobe is stocked with weather-appropriate items is essential – not only to your style, but also to your comfort. Some of the most basic warm weather items for men include t-shirts, vests, shorts and sandals – and it always helps to have a few of each item to last you through the summer, and beyond.
First, with regard to comfort, you’ll want to consider material. In warm weather, you’re going to want to wear breathable, natural fabrics, such as cotton or linen shirts, vests and shorts (these will pick up moisture and help you keep cool in the heat). You’ll also want to avoid certain synthetics, like polyester blends, as they will turn up the heat and make you sweat more.
Next, consider the fit of your warm-weather items. Clothing worn in higher temperatures should be loose and comfortable, and should not rub uncomfortably against your skin. You might even consider sizing up for certain items, to ensure you’re as comfortable as possible when it’s hot out. Colour is another important feature for apparel in the summer, with lighter colours helping you keep cool, and darker colours attracting heat.
Once you’ve considered comfort and the function of your summer items, you’ll want to turn your attention to fashion. For instance, when shopping for mens shorts, think about what types of styles will benefit your summertime needs. If you’re planning a holiday with no set agenda, you might do just fine with a set of denim, casual, and swim shorts. However, for a formal flair, include a pair of “smart” or tailored shorts that can be paired with nicer shirts. The same idea applies to shirts; and when it comes to sandals, ensure you have a nice pair – for instance, a high quality leather design – as well as a more casual pair, which who can also be found in leather. By ensuring you have just a few weather appropriate items like these in your closet, you can look and feel your very best – even when temperatures rise.
