How to Preview PDF File Attachments in Outlook 2007 Without Spending a Dime

Microsoft Outlook 2007 provides you with the capacity to preview email attachments right in the Reading Pane. There’s only one problem. You can’t preview PDF documents with it. At least you can’t unless and until you configure Outlook to take advantage of the free PDF previewer that’s built into all recent versions of Adobe Reader.

Adobe Reader (which is also often referred to as Acrobat Reader) is a complimentary program from Adobe meant for viewing PDF files. As its name implies, it is just for viewing (reading) these documents, not for creating them. If you obtain PDF documents as message attachments, chances are that you are used to saving them, then opening them in a different viewing program.

In most cases, the program you are using to examine them is Adobe Reader. When you configure Outlook to make use of the PDF previewer, you take advantage of the same technology, but this time you don’t have to leave Outlook to do the preview. Previewing attached PDF files without having to leave Outlook saves you a bit of time and energy for every PDF you preview.

Setting this up isn’t hard. All you need to do is download the current version of Adobe Reader, install it, then configure Outlook 2007 to use it. In the majority of situations, it will simply take you a few moments to complete the entire process. Even if you don’t normally make changes to the software running on your computer, if you can follow simple directions, you can set this up yourself. The time and hassle you will save in the future make the minimal effort required well worth it.
