Specializing in Echocardiography
So you’re thinking of specializing in echocardiography. This is a challenging yet very rewarding career path in the medical field, which is a branch of cardiovascular technology. You will be involved with producing images of patients’ internal organs and systems, particularly the heart, in a noninvasive way that does not involve entering the body. In order to specialize in this area of healthcare you will need to complete one of the seven certifications offered by the National Board of Echocardiography.
Before specializing in echocardiography, you will need to choose which area of this career specialty you want to go into. You can choose from advanced perioperative transesophageal echocardiography, basic perioperative transesophageal echocardiography, comprehensive echocardiography, transthoracic 2-D and Doppler echocardiography interpretation, transesophageal echocardiography, transthoracic plus stress echocardiography and transthoracic plus transesophageal echocardiography. Before you can enter into any of these specialized certificate programs, you must also pass an examination, and there are some preliminary requirements you will need to meet.
Eligible echocardiography students must hold a medical license and have been certified by a medical board before they can sit for an exam. Medical board certification, training in cardiovascular disease and some echocardiography training must also be complete before taking the exam. The examination has a patient case section and a multiple choice question area, which you will have a total of 4½ hours to complete with the time broken up into sections for each area. The NBE must grant you permission to take the test by way of a scheduling permit before you can sign up for a test date.
Specializing in echocardiography requires recertification throughout your career to be sure you are updated on all the most current technologies and practices. You must have an initial certification that was granted within ten years of your application for recertification, and you must still have a valid medical license to apply. You will only be able to pass the tests for recertification if you have maintained your skills and education and demonstrated that you are eligible. It is a tough field to go into and with such huge responsibilities, it is important to be sure you’re ready for this career and all its challenges.
